"I'd really like to walk and see the city."

A few weeks ago a gentleman was released from the ICE immigrant detention center and our volunteers came alongside him to help him get home (finally!). Maddie picked him up from the detention center and brought him to the hotel room we had booked for him so he could self-isolate in comfort and peace. Here is her reflection from that evening and I wanted to pass it along to y'all...

“The entire time I was with Carlos, he made comments about the beauty of his surroundings. He mentioned with such excitement the light breeze, the sunset over the mountains, and the Denver skyline.

When we finally arrived at his hotel, I asked if he wanted a ride or a cab to the bus station in the morning. He politely declined the offer saying, 'Thank you, but
I’d really like to walk and see the city.'

He seemed elated to be able to walk as far and as long as he could ever want- finally free from the concrete walls that surrounded him for over a year.“

With perseverance and hope,

Sarah Jackson
